The HKSW was founded by Beijing (Central Conservatory of Music) trained Alfonso Wong. He has given a large part of his life to the teaching and training of the students at St Bonaventure College and High School (SBC). The HKSW is like a big family and former students from SBC frequently return to play in the band and to help in the running, development of the band and the mentoring of the younger generation.
When the HKSW was established 26 years ago, it primarily consisted of SBC alumni and students but now about a third of the members are professional musicians, and the rest of the members are amateur music lovers with different backgrounds. Although Mr Wong had a stroke in 2007 and has not been able to participate in the daily running of the band since 2007, the band still retains Mr Wong's vision and values.
One former SBC student, Fung Ka Hing has returned to the band as a conductor and player. He says that it is amazing that Mr Wong is such a highly respected and talented musician put so much time and effort into establishing the HKSW. Ka-hing recalls that as a student he was unable to afford to purchase his first trumpet. Mr Wong personally assisted him to acquire his first instrument. Now as a result of Mr Wong's teaching and support, Ka-hing has been able to pursue a successful career in music. Ka-hing says that when he first returned to his old school to help with the HKSW he asked Mr Wong for advice. Mr Wong advised him that the band members are the band's most valuable asset and he would need to encourage band member's sense of belonging and commitment in order for the band to be successful.
Even now the HKSW still follows the examples set by Mr Wong. Band members who are financially unable to purchase instruments are able to borrow instruments from the band or from senior members. Students are also able to seek assistance in getting free lessons, finding suitable teachers and funding their musical studies.
When asked Mr Wong says that he is extremely pleased and satisfied that his former students are continuing and furthering his work in the encouragement and mentoring of promising young musicians.
